Emperor Norton – for those that that have never heard of the guy – came to San Francisco in 1848 after living in South Africa, tried to corner the rice market and lost it all. He proclaimed himself Emperor of the United States in 1859 and “Protector of Mexico” in 1863. A currency was created in his honor and there still may be a copy in the Wells Fargo Museum in downtown San Francisco.
On January 8, 1880, Norton collapsed at the corner of California and Dupont (now Grant) streets and died before he could be given medical treatment. According to the San Francisco Chronicle, upwards of 10,000 people lined the streets of San Francisco to pay him homage at his funeral. Norton has been immortalized as the basis of characters in the literature of Mark Twain, Robert Louis Stevenson, and others. See Wikipedia for more.
So what does this have to do with resurrecting his currency as an Art Project?
Art and Money$ have a long history.
Rich folk (and not so rich) have been collecting Art for centuries – perhaps because when you have enough money, Art & Beauty become an important focus/value in life.
We want to create an Art based currency$ worthy of the memory of Norton I as well as create works of True Beauty that bring pleasure to the eye.
What do we offer?
If you are ever dissatisfied with a Norton$ Art Piece – you can exchange it back for what you paid for it in US$ currency. We obviously have picked pieces that we hope you will not want to do this with. But that is our Guarantee. A Full lifetime money back Guarantee.
We also want to further a culture where as Art appreciates in Value and is sold – the original Artist gets a cut – which is why we ask that folks who sell a piece of N$ Art give a percentage (how about 2-10%?) of the sales price to the original artist. Obviously this is unenforceable – but we hope that in the spirit of Supporting the Arts – people that value Art & Beauty will want to contribute to the Artist (or artists) that created the original piece.
Welcome to the Norton$ Art Collection.
