Joshua Norton came to San Francisco from South Africa in 1849 with $40,000 dollars. In 1852 he tried to corner the rice market and lost it all. In 1859 he proclaimed himself “Norton I., Emperor of the United States”, In 1863, after Napoleon III invaded Mexico, he took the secondary title of “Protector of Mexico”.
